Volunteer Opportunities
The Family Justice Center of Erie County, Inc., seeks qualified volunteers to support a comprehensive center for victims of Family Violence and their children. Victims of domestic violence in Erie County are able to come to one location to avail themselves of one or more services: talk with an advocate, get a restraining order, plan for their safety, talk to a police officer or sheriff, meet with a civil attorney or a prosecutor, receive forensic medical assistance, and counsel with a chaplain.
Our services hold a high accountability for victim safety and self-determination as well as offender accountability in a community network grounded in zero tolerance for Family Violence. The Grand Opening of the FJC was celebrated May 2, 2006. The hours: Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Several volunteer opportunities are available – all positions require a time commitment of a minimum of 4 hours/week, 16 hours/month. Background checks will be conducted by the Family Justice Center . Comprehensive training classes are provided for all volunteer positions.
- Administration – Volunteers who work on administrative duties will work closely with the Administrative Assistant and Project Coordinator who will provide projects that will need to be completed for the FJC. Qualifications: must have solid computer skills with Microsoft Office software.
- Reception and Hospitality – Volunteers supervise and provide for the well being of clients while they are waiting to meet with professionals from FJC partner agencies. Responsible for assisting the clients while on site and supporting the duties of the receptionist or covering the reception desk in their absence. Qualifications: must have excellent customer service skills with adults and children; Multilingual a PLUS!
- Child Waiting – Supervises the child waiting area. Qualifications: must be good with working with children. Multilingual a PLUS!
- Intake – Volunteers support the professional advocates in assuring the individual needs of each client are met. The Program Coordinator supervises these volunteers. Qualifications: must have excellent customer service skills with adults and children; MSW strongly recommended; Multilingual a PLUS!
- Interfaith Chaplain – Volunteers are lay, seminarian, or ordained and provide non-proselytizing spiritual support and direct services to clients of all faith traditions, as well as to FJC staff. The Chaplain Program Manager supervises these volunteers. Qualifications: a member of good standing within their faith community required; minimum of 1 unit CPE strongly recommended; Multilingual a PLUS!
